Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ is now enjoying worldwide prominence as a combat sport and martial arts. Those who are not into sports take BJJ training as a good physical workout for the body, as well as to acquire knowledge on self defense. Yes. BJJ revolves around the concept that even smaller and weaker individuals can defend themselves against much stronger and bigger opponents. With the use of weight distribution, leverage, holds and submissions, one can win a fight regardless of strength, weight, and size.

When training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, it is advisable to always wear the best bjj gi. The BJJ Gi is the standard uniform when in training or in competition. It has a rich history like the sport itself. The first BJJ Gi was a clear copycat of the uniform of the Japanese Judo which resembled a kimono. Over time, the BJJ Gi was designed until today.

There are several brands of BJJ Gi. Each brand has its own strengths and weaknesses. However, when you select one that suits you perfectly, the quality of your training can go notches higher. Here are the things that you should consider when choosing the right BJJ Gi for your training.

Comfort

kidsYour BJJ Gi should fit you well. It should provide enough room for you to move your body, hands, and legs. Another factor is the material used. Most Gis are made from sturdy cotton blend which provides the best comfort while being strong enough so as not to give way during training.

If you are not comfortable with your BJJ Gi, you will surely lack the enthusiasm or to give your all during practice.

IBJJF Certified

Buying a BJJ Gi that is certified by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation has many benefits. This means that you are training with a uniform that is licensed for its high quality. If you are training for a future competition, getting used to the same brand can assure you of the same comfort during the tournament. You will not need any adjustments anymore. Using a new brand during a competition is not a wise decision because you may have not tested it for its durability.

Color

During training, you may choose any color that you prefer. But during IBJJF accredited competitions, you only have two choices, black or blue. Otherwise in practice, you can choose your favorite color. This may seem trivial but to some they can get extra confidence.

Cost

You should never compromise quality. BJJ is a contact sport so anything can happen to a cheap and low quality Gi. It can just get ripped with a firm hold from your sparring partner. It is always best to buy a BJJ Gi that is worth your money.
